ImageThe Character of Goju-Ryu, Kata Implications for Experienced Practitioners
by Rich Stamper
(Paperback, 392 Pages, Published 2011)

The theme of the this 392 page book revolves around how to understand what Goju-Ryu kata have to teach, and to provide a methodology intended to help us learn how to learn from the kata – not just learn the kata.

As the title indicates, the book is intended for experienced practitioners (ni-dan and above) and assumes that competence in kata performance exists.  It is not a book about learning the kata or how to perform them – we already have excellent examples for that.

For those who seek an understanding of the lessons of kata the book should be a valuable resource.  Because of the limited audience, only a minimum quantity will be printed.

ImageGoju-Ryu Karate-Do Kyokai, Fundamentals for Traditional Practitioners, Volume 1
by Motoo Yamakura
(Paperback, 161 Pages, Published 1989)

This is the first of two books written at the request of the membership of the Goju-Ryu Karate-do Kyokai (GKK) by Motoo Yamakura, and also has a companion DVD available for purchase that compliments the book. Master Yamakura's first book primarily addresses the introductory aspects of Goju-Ryu Karate in the GKK and Seigokan way. While it does this admirably, it goes well beyond. The book includes a description of karate, a brief history, karate masters, rank requirements, martial arts, philosophy, theory, basic practices, introductory sparring, some Goju-Ryu kata, and more. The basic concepts and philosophies exposed in this series are appropriate and often enlightening to both beginning and advanced students of martial arts in general. It applies to the novice and the experienced practitioner, to the student and to the instructor.
